Power of YOU

1. Q: What are the eligibility requirements for the Power of YOU program at Saint Paul College?
A: Requirements for eligibility in the Power of YOU program are as follows:

  • Graduate from a Saint Paul or Minneapolis public city high school (no suburbs) in Spring 2008
  • Be a resident of the City of Saint Paul or City of Minneapolis (no suburbs)
  • Complete and submit the Power of YOU program application
  • Come in to take your Assessment in reading, writing and math or complete the English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) Assessment if you are a non-native speaker of English.
  • Submit the 2008-09 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA - available after January 1, 2008) and complete the financial aid process at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  Include the Saint Paul College FAFSA school code 005533.

All eligibility requirements must be completed and submitted to Saint Paul College by May 1, 2008.

2. Q: Are students from private high schools in the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul eligible? 
A:  No, only students who graduate in spring of 2008 from a public, charter or alternative high school in the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul are eligible to apply for the program. Students must also reside in the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

3. Q: What additional criteria do students need to meet to remain eligible for the Power of YOU program at Saint Paul College?
A: Requirements to remain eligible for the Power of YOU program at Saint Paul College are as follows:

  • Attend New Student Orientation and register for Fall Semester 2008 classes
  • Enroll in at least 12 credits per term toward a degree, diploma or certificate
  • Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements each term
  • Participate in Power of YOU activities, including service learning and other volunteer opportunities

4. Q: How will the Power of YOU program pay for college?
A: Students will apply for state and federal financial aid. Tuition and fees that are not covered by government grants will be funded by the Power of YOU program (money students don’t have to pay back) offered by the colleges.  The program will support as many students as possible based on student need and funds available.

5. Q: Does the program pay for anything more than tuition?
A: The program pays for tuition and mandatory fees, but does not cover books, program specific supplies or living expenses.

6. Q: Will the program offer anything other than financial assistance with tuition and fees?
A: The program will offer an introductory course to learn classroom success skills.  It will also offer individualized academic advising, tutoring, career development services, personal counseling, and social and cultural activities.

7. Q: How will you choose which students are accepted into the program?
A: The financial aid process that students must follow will identify the neediest students. We will distribute the money to the neediest students first.

8. Q:  How will I find out if I’m accepted into the Power of YOU program?
A:  All students accepted into the Power of YOU program will be notified by mail after the final deadline.
